Nine movements by an American composer, each illustrating a drawing by the Austrian artist. You can purchase Slides of the drawings (for slide projector or overhead projector) to show simultaneously with the performance. Some of the movements are very difficult, but hilarious, and the audience will love the musical commentary on the drawings (especially "The Art Critic"). My favorite is "The Love Match" which includes snippets of every work you've ever heard at a wedding, although the zany "Dance Craze" finale will keep you tapping toes throughout (it's in the score). Unfortunately, many of the drawings are unsuitable for young children or (we discovered) for recitals in Baptist churches. (I rate them PG.) |

| Nice arrangement of the Sextet. As a bassoonist, I much prefer this version to the arrangement in the "Yellow Books" because the bassoon keeps all the solos from the sextet. Composer's note - The creative inspiration came from the booming tide of the Chaoyin Cave in the Putuo Mountain located in southeastern China: the dull chanting from the Buddhist nunnery; the reciting tunes played by Xiao, a Chinese traditional woodwind instrument; and the rude, primitive roaring by Changjian, a Tibetan low-range wind instrument. This piece, which was heard at the most recent Clarinet Convention in Oklahoma, has been played by professional quartets the world over. It now exists as well as a woodwind quintet from the same publisher. An arrangement, available from the composer, has been made with a string orchestra accompaniment to either the quartet or quintet. The work lasts 7 minutes and is in 4 dance sections, each more frenzied than the last. The composer is a klezmer clarinetist, with a CD entitled Street Song to his credit (reviewed in The Clarinet). |

Four or Five Studies takes a three note motive and beats it to death in a variety of creative ways. Some of the beatings overlap, so you might count four or five different treatments of the material, depending on how you look at these things. (Actually, you could call it three studies with some transitional material.) Only the motive is beaten upon, no musicians were harmed during the composition of this piece. |

Commissioned by the Israeli Council for the Arts. "Ru'akh" in Hebrew literally means "wind". Ru'akh Quintet was composed for the New Israeli Woodwind Quintet and premiered by them in March 1995 at the Henry Crown Concert Hall in Jerusalem during a concert that was broadcast live by the Voice of Music radio station. Since I know the members of this quintet in person I wanted the piece to feature the individual character of each of the members of the quintet. The piece is built of six sections, five of which are instrumental solos, one for each member of the group, while the others are accompanying. The remaining section acts as a middle section were all are playing together on an equal basis. " |

Some of them are good for educational concerts -- the last movement was our group's "theme song" for several years until we grew tired of it. |
