 The lower (smaller) of the bell keys is the Bb vent, though on Marigaux oboes it opens with the low B key 9and stays open for low Bb).
 
 the reason oboes have this vent is that without it, the low Bb is flat as the bell is around 5mm too long. But if the bell is shortened it knackers the E, so to keep the long bell and bring the low Bb up to pitch, the vent only opens for low Bb (or low B as well on Marigaux).
 
 What's the plural for Marigaux anyway? Is it Marigauxes or just Marigaux?
