In the oboe world there really aren't a lot of brands. In student instruments under $1000 one really has a choice of Selmer/bundy, Jupiter, Buffet, and Yamaha and some off-brands that are risky.

Around $2000 there are a couple Yamahas, a Buffet, and a couple of Fox oboes with modified keywork.

Then around $3000+ is where oboes with full keywork start showing up normally and a whole slew of respected brands.

I would believe that of the choice of under $1000, the Selmer/bundy is the best choice. (Jupiter & Buffet in that level are never recommended, Yamaha 211 is a horror story, and Yamaha 241 is over priced and should be skipped for for a $2000 range oboe Yamaha 440 or Fox 330/3)
