I've played oboe since high school (graduated in 1961), played in college til 1965, grad school on oboe in 1966-67.
Back in the college years I played the university Selmer oboe (wood) and it played well...good sound also. Selmer does make the cheaper student instruments even in plastic. The college did have the upper end Selmer and one Larillee which also was a good upper end instrument. The English Horn I used was a Selmer.
For grad school I bought a Cabart (now bought out by Loree). I had a choice in grad school of a Loree or Cabart... both are excellent instruments.
I have played student grade instruments in plastic but I miss the 3 octave key instruments, forked F extra key and other features.
I favor wood instruments but you have to avoid cracking the instruments. In cold weather you keep it warm (I put it under my coat). When taken indoors, you never blow warm air through it until it is warmed up. Also every 6 months I take out a pheasant feather and oil it with mineral oil and oil the bore. Over 30 years the wood does contract and the key posts and rods have to be reworked some---not too expensive. With plastic lined bore in the upper joint the wood will still contract and the plastic liner can come loose some. But we are talking about this happening over 30 years.
Plastic instruments I have never seen in my college level playing and not at an adult community orchestra level.
So it really depends on how long will you stick with oboe and where will you be playing it....high school level, college or beyond??
Down in Texas in grad school, I also went with my oboe teacher out picking cane on the Trinity River to make reeds from raw cane....some fun.
