The cane was very green since we (instructor and I) did not let it dry out. The reed when worked up lasted about 1 week of constant playing---very short life span, but the price was right. You of course have to have the spliter and other tools to work the cane from raw material.
The problem with ebay is you don't know really what condition the instrument is and if not sold as described it is next to impossible to return. I once bought a all wood Linton at a pawn shop for about $150. It had a crack in it but I used an old trick to fix it. Crack was in the upper joint so I put the upper joint in a plastic bag with orange peels. The acid given off from the peels shrinks the wood overnight. Then I remove joint and put super glue in the reduced crack to keep it from expanding. Don't leave the peels actually in the case for long periods---they mildew. If the horn would have been worth more, I would have a professional pin the instrument.
