Right - I got the plastic Signet Soloist oboe this morning and so far so good. I took it into work to use the machinery there to drill the bell vent tonehole and pillar holes in the correct places, fit pillars and drill them and get the key pieces to make the new keywork with.
Here's a list on what I've done (or doing) so far:
On the top joint I've fitted a thumbplate, fitted a new back 8ve key (I used an oboe d'amore back 8ve key as the original was set too high up the joint and wasn't the best lookig piece of keywork, not that the rest of the keywork will win awards in the looks department!) and fitted an adjusting screw on the top fingerplate (LH 1). I haven't fitted a 3rd 8ve key, but that can wait as it's not too important.
On the bottom joint I've added a tab to the RH 1 fingerplate and wll be fitting the low B-C link - it's too late to do this now so I'll do it tomorrow. I also noticed the cross F key touch is a bit on the low side, so I'll build up the touch so it's much easier to use.
On the bell I've relocated the lower pillar further down (it's at the topmost edge of the 'Signet' logo), drilled the bell vent tonehole and cut the bedplace, lengthened the key barrel and added the bell vent cup and arm (and had the bell key spring fitted into the upper pillar).
Although I wasn't expecting it to play too well when I got it this morning, it surprised me. But there are a couple of notes that I'll retune once I've got all the keys back from being silver plated, fitted and the lot repadded. While the keys are off I can make some minor keywork alterations and tidy things up here and there before getting things plated.
At least now I'll have a back-up oboe in plastic so I won't have to worry about playing my kingwood S5 when it's too cold or outdoors.
Quick update:
All the keywork modifications are now done, so the next thing to do is polish everything up and get them plated, then refit them when I get them back and do a full overhaul so I'll have a working plastic oboe built to my spec.
And I've now got green hands from all the papering up!
