Courtesy of my husband, who was delighted to stop cooking pasta and come fiddle around with his new digital camera.

Everybody's anatomy is going to be slightly different, but generally speaking you don't want it on the very tippy-tip of your thumb, because it's too heavy to balance it there, nor do you want up towards your palm, because that would interfere with proper manipulation of the keys by your right hand. You want it in the little dip just to the left of your thumb joint, resting on the fleshy part of your thumb, not on the thumbnail.

And it tends to move around a bit while you're playing; it's not like it's carved in stone that it MUST be in one particular magical spot on your thumb. But generally speaking, this is where it fits.

Takes muscle, and practice, to balance it there. When your hand cramps, quit for a while and go do something else.

You will find that if you're a hangnail picker, you'll have to stop doing that, or else it will be quite painful to rest your oboe on the raw part. I find that in the winter especially I am fanatical about keeping great swathes of Nivea Hand Creme on the side of my thumb just so I'm not tempted to pick at it and make a big sore spot where I'm gonna need to balance a two-pound oboe, ouch.
