Hey Elkwoman, in my experience many student model oboes actually have smaller reed wells than professional oboes. This is a real problem for students, many can't get their reeds out of the horn without help. So if the reed cork is dry, I would DEFINATELY put cork grease on it.

If you have trouble getting the reed out, grasp the reed with thumb and forefinger on the threads and twist, while pushing down on your oboe with your other fingers (carefully, if you slip you will split your reed right up the blades!) This can be surprisingly hard; but with a bit of pressure even my smallest students can do it.

Some new corks need grease every day for a few days, but then you won't need to grease for weeks/months at a time. I can't remember the last time I greased my tenon joints! If you grease the tenon joints every day, they get really slimey and I believe it breaks down the cork faster, so only use grease when you need it.
