Dear Susan, Stephen, Dutchy, Judy, ChrisP, ElVizconde, hautboisteur,
I GOT THE OBOE IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah!
Thank you all so so so, soooooooooo much for all the great messages, information, tips, hints, comments about getting started in the oboe world.
I just got it in a little while ago, and took my time to assemble it.
And I have a question, kind of trembling...the bell...there is a hole (all the way through) about an inch down from the small opening of the bell. Is this how it is supposed to be? There is no hardware on the bell, just two empty holes drilled straight through.
However, the rest of it appears to be in great shape. There are some dings on some of the long stemmed buttons, but even so, it is all well made, feels like heavy duty hardware. I think that there must have been some pad replacement somewhere along the way, because a good chunk of them appear to be a kind of cork and the others remaining, pads.
The whole piece is in really great shape overall. Now, I am waiting for the reeds to come in, so I am stuck not playing it until it comes. But in the meantime I'm planning to do some cleaning on the instrument and case. The case is in really great shape; actually among the better cases I have gotten when buying a used instrument. But I just like things like this absolutely hygienically clean, so it is going to get a good cleaning. The outside of the case is just a bit dusty but in great shape too.
I'm absolutely delighted (except if this bell was drilled on) with my two-hundred dollar, plus shipping, investment. Realizing of course, my future reed purchases and lessons make that a drop in the bucket.
It also came with two swab type things that you stick in the holes, plus a polishing cloth made by Selmer for nickel-plated and/or silver plated instruments. And also, there is a plastic cover guard for one end (bottom of the long piece).
I have not a clue of course yet if any of the buttons have leaks and stuff like that, but all the parts seem to move like one would think they should move.
Nothing seems to be smashed or ruined or out of alignment visually.
Please tell me about the bell regarding these "holes", please.
And thanks so much everyone; you have all helped me enormously.
Thanks again.
Oh, and Judy, the Essential Elements 2000 that I got for the oboe was an older one, although it did have two CD's in it; versus the even older ones that only had one CD therein. So, it is not worth hunting down that DVD for it? What is covered in the DVD, may I ask?
Lastly, I was thinking and want to ask...are there any places online (usually a music store vendor) that has an oboe tuning check? I know of places on line that you can check your guitar, mandolin, banjo, etc. tunings, but I have not seen any for clarinet or oboe in all my travels via internet come to think about it. Strange, because these little perks are what causes people to keep checking those store websites. I just haven't seen an oboe checker or anything like that...have I missed it...is a link out there? If so, I would love to know where it is. Thanks.
And also thanks for all the advice about "teachers" and learning. And what to do and what not to do. Believe me, I am all ears and am so thankful!
THANK YOU!
Thank you all for everything!
