Thanks to the encouragement of several replies to this thread I have been experimenting with reeds to see if my intonation improves. The following reed seem to minimize my intonation and stability issues on the E note:
Staple: Standard 47 mm, purchased from North Texas Oboe Reeds
Cane: 10.5 cm gouged by NTOR
Shape: Brannen X (NTOR has an original, and I asked him to shape me 10 pcs) This shape has a longer "body" and an elegant curve down to the neck, and ties on a trifle longer than my regular N 1 shape (very scientific, I know).
Scrape: American, roughly standard measurements (see M. Schuring website for diag.) I don't have a thickness gauge, I use backlight or black plaque to estimate.
here's the kicker: Finished length - 70.7 mm, and left just a bit harder than usual. This keeps the pitch up, though makes me work harder. Tone is full and round.
I can only surmise that Loree tune their instruments using longer, possibly French/European style reeds, and this is why American-style players complain about the E tuning. Shame, since their main market is USA and American style players.
