Mike, sorry if i have forgotten but do you play American scrape?
The thing about general European reed making be it French, English or German is that it is our sole basic duty to make sure that the reeds do not slip. I know that American reed makers intentionally create a slip so that the reeds seal better, but it doesnt seem to help on short scrape reeds at all, in fact, the worst reeds i have made are those which slip. Even if a reed does not seal properly, we always have our trusty wire and gold beater's skin, though some people do not approve of it, at least i do.
I myself, being an amateur reed maker, cannot help much because i am still having trouble with getting an exact tie that creates equal pressure on the sides of the reed, not too tight, not too loose, which i have been haiving problems lately with the latter, and i suspect it probably has something to do with the tying length that you have mentioned as i have recently changed a shaper tip and staple model. Painful this reed making thing!
I hope the Guercios will really help in long term. Hear from you soon about your progress!
Regards,
Howard
