update:
i took out my most stable reed and played through the exercises in the article linked above. I highly recommend it for the way it forces one to focus on the proper mix of embouchure and wind speed/support to minimize embouchure adjustments...the E is definitely sharp absent adjustment while the other notes can be fine-tuned primarily by providing proper wind support. When I depress the low B playing middle E, it significantly brings it down; however, i can't imagine actually playing this way other than the occasional exposed long E (nice alternative fingering for the loree crowd - thanks again D-reeder2). I also confirmed that wrowand is absolutely right: when I go down one octave from a properly tuned middle E, the low E is flat..Loree's deal with Le Diable. By combining good support with a nice round embouchure I can bring the middle E down, but I'm still going to have to get my ear used to it. Again, I highly recommend that article: the B'-C' exercise for proper reed placement was very interesting.
