"Here's a question for you all - if the oboes you try are so out of tune, why do you buy them? Just a little food for thought."
Because it's all about tradeoffs and whatever weaknesses the intrument has we figure out how to manage, by adjusting or hitting extra keys or whatever (tape and nail polish )...Is there such a thing as the perfect oboe? here's a good example from, uh, today: if you've played the New World, you know that little phrase in the 4th movement in unison with the Flute that's a little arpeggio riff in E major that goes B-E-G#-high B-G#-high B-G#-high B-E? Ok, on my old Loree which I'm still using while breaking in the new one, I have to roll in to get the high B up to pitch, then I have to roll out like crazy to hit the E in a place that doesn't freak out the Flute. That's a pain, and I think it'll be better on the new AK since I won't have to roll in to get to the high B (but I'd either have to roll out or hit that darn Bb key to nail the E), or maybe I'll go nuts and stuff nail polish in the tone hole! Naw, I don't think I'll ever have the guts to do that!
