<There are three notes that have alternate fingerings: F Eb Ab >>
Well, yes, but there are more Alternate fingerings than that (such as Bb, C, C#/Db, D etc) ... but as you say, it's too early for Elkwoman to be concerned with these, just stick to the BASICS
... which (oh-no, she's not gonna harp on about this again?! OMG)
... in the case of a basic beginner's oboe, if there's no F resonance vent or left F on it, have to learn how to brighten a stuffy or dull sounding forked F by applying either left or right Eb at same time ... a very tricky fingering combination indeed, no wonder new millenium oboe folks actively promote the notion that forked F fingering is 'a bad habit' and would rather learn or teach students on oboes fitted with both F Res and Left F -- can skip this tough forked F with Eb technique entirely thataway, not that learning Left F is a piece of cake, it isn't! I'm thinking my next oboe's gotta have ROLLER F!
On my 'Yoomy-Ha' (ah-so yes she's got a name now) fitted with its F Res and Left F, i've had to train myself to STOP using Eb key with my forked F's, as they came out much too bright -- F Res is just another Eb vent anyway, double trouble using both at once
On the other hand, my summer oboe teacher tipped me that Eb is a great resonance key for 2nd octave key notes, it adds some 'depth' to those otherwise thin high notes (also smooths out bright F#, G and G# on 1st 8ve) a real bonus when maintaining optimum air pressure and adjusting appropriate embouchure up there is still a learner's challenge ... hey, just a few more Alternate fingering options
