Hi Elkwoman,
I know that this is an exciting day for you. If you have some experience
with a clarinet, you're further ahead than I was. I couldn't attempt to
put my oboe together for a few days. I was afraid I'd do something horrible to it. Now it's second hand nature for me.
If you don't have a teacher lined-up or you won't be taking lessons for
awhile, I think the book and the DVD would be very helpful. The DVD, as Dutchy said, has a young man who demonstrates the basics of the oboe while a man narrates. The section on reed crowing misled me. It might have just been my brain, but the DVD led me to believe that crowing was actually playing the reed. In other words, the kid played it when the narrator was saying he was crowing. This BB helped me to finally discern
the difference. Everything else was good. I found the fingering chart in the back of the book and copied it to tape to my computer hutch. I refer to it all the time for the notes.
I also like the self learning technique of the DVD with the first few practice pages of the book. You hear the oboe play a phrase of music, then you play it with drums and/or bass playing the beat. I liked that.
If you are going to start lessons right away, you might not need to spend money on the DVD.
Enjoy yourself. You are at an exciting time of your oboe adventure.
