... seconded -- also came from training culture where quiet and modest leadership of the often lonely oboe player, especially in amateur ensembles, who simply accepts personal responsibility to be there much earlier, respectfully warming up own 'difficult, sensitive and finicky' reedy instrument to the best pitch du jour, maybe exercising predominantly in keys Bflat & F, or C & A maj, depending on director's preferred tuning note, or other keys predominant in the music itself -- this greets other musicians as they arrive and influences their own warmup tuning
... as choir member long, long ago, much impressed by an outstanding and memorable example in one community orchestra we sang with, in which the only oboe was already there, running up and down scales, etc. which he interrupted readily with many fascinating little jingles and flourishes (cheerful, mischievous, even naughty!) to greet newly arriving musicians personally, there were lots of smiles and waves, the orchestra played well together, even our usually cantankerous, crabby and dour Dr conductor looked happy when he later walked on heralded by a full-blooded tuning A. Everybody officially tuned up as he walked on stage and fell silent, at the ready, the instant he stepped up on the podium.
