Another variable that I have found to influence the "bright" C sound is the stability of the reed.
When I use very stable reeds and maintain a consistent air pressure, the transition to/from C is virtually unnoticeable. These reeds also tend to be a bit more on the resistant side.
With a "softer," less resistant reed, the C will scream out unless I make the effort to get right on the tip of the reed and muffle it with my lips -- cut it off at the knees, so to speak.
vboboe, I like the idea of "less force", but consistent air, as a way to get over this oboe "break".
