Haha....it seemed to have gone away some time ago (the airy A note), i don't really know what i did......but it went away! I never really got back to root of the airy A, and when i focused more on other stuff it simply went away.
Yes the oboe timbre is a very intresting thing...The bright (most people would say) C is actually no more than a beginning problem, and shouldn't be taken too seriously at times. It's actually a good way to judge whether you have too much reed in your mouth and so on.
This brings to me a tuning method which is quite effective. Play the tuning A, slur to the next C# and then slur to the following D. If the C# has a rather weird tone when compared to the A and C, you know have to adjust. This will probably show a sharp C# and an in tune A and D (the D might be sharp to, depending on each player's variables), and you will have to cushion more on the C# to balance the intonation. In the end you will realise that it's not compensating the C# that's important. Once you start cushioning the reed more and trying to make the A and the D sound like the in tune C#, your tone and intonation in a whole will improve quite drastically. Of course that's just what happened to me.
It can happen the other way around (when i just begun practising that method), it sounded to me that the A and D was normal, and the C# simply needed adjustment, but it usually happens that the problem is within ourselves.
Going back to the A, unless it is a scary airy sound, so serious that you never want to hit a middle A ever, i think it takes a bit more practise to understand that it's not as bad as you think. It may well also be a reed issue. My Eb sounds airy though...haha....must hear other comments from this board!
