Hi!

You do not have to feel bad about not following the trumpet's excessively high pitch. That is the trumpet player's problem, not yours. The director seems to be off base. I don't know how to resolve it except to just play the best you can in the 440 ballpark and don't say anything. A conductor with a tuner can be a pain in the rear but he/she is always the boss so you need to cooperate as best you can. But an oboe player cannot match crazy pitches regardless of the comments. However, we must be vigilant to detect a change in stability of our reed for the worse, which can happen in the middle of a rehearsal or concert.

There are always a lot of folks who are critics of the oboe player's sound and pitch but that may be due to the oboes prominent position in the group. There is still no place to hide. Try to play reasonably soft as we are rarely asked to play louder.

I always try to have my reeds crow stable, unvarying C's on the tip and near the thread, assuring me that with my Loree, I can be in the ballpark of 440. It is also my preference to use a somewhat wide shape, RDG -2, as this shape seems easier to make stable reeds with. I usually do not use a tuner when making reeds or practicing as it would only be in the way but always use one when giving the tuning A. Directors have not been a problem.
