Cooper,

Valid questions.

Tom Stacy of NY Phil said this is what guarantees the lows speaking. Critical not to shave cane from the top of the spine, only along its side.

Thickness at tip of tip: .10 mm. (per Wayne Rapier) The thickness of the spine varies along its length. Should be .50 mm at the triangle base (bottom of inverted V) IOW where the spine intersects the base. Then with Martin Schuring's diagram in my head, I gingerly scrape the back quadrants. Sometimes the spine of the tip is a single dark line; other times there is dark either side of the spine. I put a lot of reliance on backlighting, natural sunlight as well as my high intensity 20 watt reed lamp. I like a growl in my low crow & try to get the pitch floor to be as close to A as possible (Elaine Douvas) G# not as good, but still playable. On the sag it needs to go to F# & no lower (John Mack) Once I'm there, I pinch the reed dripping with water shut on a flat plaque & play it in. Some last a few days, others one or two practices. But that's how the cane crumbles.

Best,

john
