Embouchure: I use a rounded embouchure. Think the shape of the letter "O".

Throat: Open up the back of your throat at all times.

Posture: Sit straight up with the instrument at an angle of a little less than 90 degrees to your body.

Fingers: Relax your fingers; drop your elbows. Picture a stealthy cat playing your oboe: that's how your fingers should play: light and quiet.

Gurgling: ??? Sounds like a problem with the instrument or the reed. Get a repair tech to check it out.

Reed: Trash the Rico and buy some hand-made reeds: Dunkel, Sorton, Cooper Wright, Roberto's in NYC all make great reeds (you can find them all on the Internet). The reed is practically the instrument. No matter how good your instrument is, and no matter how good you are, if you don't have a good reed, you're going to sound bad. You'll pay at least $20 per reed, but it so worth it!

Bottom Line: Find a real oboe player to give you lessons. You will learn all of the above and more in one lesson, and in a much useful way than any of us could tell you by typing.
