I have to disagree with your teacher on mixing instruments. So long as each instrument is practiced I can't see a problem. I (and many of my friends who actually have talent - I just do it for fun) double, triple and quadruple on a variety of instruments and the only things that seem to cause problems are lack of practice and occasionally quick changes (i.e. less than a bar) between a combo like bari sax to piccolo flute. I remain convinced that it is only when approaching pro level playing that this would be a problem, and then I am mostly inclined to think that much of the difficulty would center around practice time and not muscle development.
