OK, noted the vitally important detailed difference between paper test for pads & touch test for springs (jeez!)

... now, can we maybe mostly rule out springs?
-- considering the manner in which oboe first became A Problem (suspected grand-child of wrenching middle joint in proud display of can put oboe together!)
-- and noting the original visible damage was slightly bent Basic F vent pad, and slightly bent C pad (both sort of worked back, but maybe C's not right)
-- which *alas* wasn't noticed in the very beginning before touching the double screws E/D (so yours truly put stuff out and feel responsible to give it my best shot to put things back, guilt trip, but hey this is a valuable learning experience)
-- and noting only one spring appears to be less than ramrod straight (the one for C#pad), yet knowing for a fact this key has worked anyway in spite of that some times during my twiddling adjustment screws these last two weeks

-- what i have noticed though is that the bumper corks under the adj. screws are worn through to the metal in most places (owning up, owner did that, but it's not a fatal error -- just a real nuisance for repairs)
-- so i've put temporary slivers of thin micropore tape on the worst ones to see if that would made any difference (but of course this tape won't stick well with such small contact areas, so it's only a temporary 'test' fix)
-- getting the worst case screws back has been a bit easier
-- BUT the C-E assembly isn't balancing out with the Eb-key, still can't get D to sound (it did once, at beginning of last week) and C# is affected by all this
-- so i still feel quite hopeful it'll all work nicely if only the right screw balance can be achieved, but getting it ... ?!

well, maybe my 18 monther is almost due for its first major maintenance (2 year old) overhaul anyway, clean out octave vents while at it, fix worn corks, y'know the detail TLC stuff -- so if i took it in tomorrow and let it wait around until technician available in another week or two, i can always hope to have it back in time for year end performances in June -- if no spare parts have to be ordered and wait weeks for them !!!

Hm, one thing's for sure, i'm in no rush to learn how to be an oboe technician, clearly i'm not cut out for it, drat! there's another retirement income idea tossed away

Puts pressure on me to think about maybe moving up a notch to another oboe this coming year and convert this one (repaired) to backup ...
