Spring tension is checked by feeling the amount of resistance of the springs through touch. You have to operate the keys to feel the spring tension - you don't check for spring tension by using a feeler gauge under the pads.

The heaviest spring should be the con bar (on the side of the tip joint) and the back 8ve key, and the lightest spring is the F vent. Once you have those as the main referrences then work out the in-between tensions.

If I had a device to measure spring tension I'd put the figures on here as a guide - if only I knew what kind of measuring device this is (something like a Newtonmeter but in reverse). You can see I've never used anything like this - I go by how it all feels under my fingers.

Assuming all the pads are all seating well and the spring tension is well balanced, the next step is regulating.
