Hehehe... Well, it ain't easy keeping an oboe forum interesting, but I do my best. :-)

Absolutely. It's just a microscopic blade at the end of the visible blade. It provides the finesse of an acute bevel, but its chief advantage is that it achieves a positive rake angle when the knife is held perpendicular to the reed, and that reduces the cutting force required. Positioned similarly, conventional beveled reed knives provide neutral rake angles, whereas flat-ground and sabre-ground knives (i.e., most pocket knives, hunting knives, etc.) provide negative rake angles. So the scraping burr offers a unique degree of control. We don't have to clumsily push the blade forward, because we can remove cane with a mere flick of the wrist. The drawback is that the burr breaks down quickly and must be re-established frequently. For me, that's a fair trade.

I won't be at this year's convention, but perhaps we'll meet next year. The 2012 convention is practically next door to me, so it'll be hard finding an excuse to keep away. Anyway, I'm always up for a spirited discussion of sharpening!
Cheers,
Drew
