Well..... I have been making reeds for over 25 years (even during my 10 year engineering school time) and the sharper & cleaner, the better. Apart from splitting firewood, I have no woodworking background. From my 3rd year of oboe, I have never bought ready-made reeds: been making my own. My reeds are quite satisfactory by my standards and were (long time ago) complimented by others including a former principal oboe of the Montreal Symphony.

Shaving hairs = too sharp? Yes, because that snags in the cane. But finishing with a ceramic stone (approx. 1000 and 4000 grit) is right... and no burrs... or at least, no metal "leftovers" from a rougher stone.

This does require a very light scraping motion, precisely because it digs more than with burrs. But I find scraping the tip much easier with that.... again, if we're using the word "burr" for the same thing.
