At first I want to say "not much" because during my time spent as a security guard and afterwards Engineering School, I just made reeds as I had always done and practiced the very few minutes I had each month.
Since then, I mostly learned about gouger blades, how they're made, how the geometry works: this showed how the headaches I give myself are to be avoided by NOT doing what I do.... I'm just too cheap to buy a new machin! A BIG THANKS to huboboe, cjwright and a few others for that! Concerning reed knives, nothing has yet proven that standard blade design principles and sharpening techniques are inapplicable.
The blossoming of the internet has introduced me to a huge number of tools which used to be simply out of reach except for high profile woodworkers. Living in Ottawa allows me to go to Lee Valley and see a huge array of sharpening equipment, getting pro-tips that you just can't guess from looking at a catalogue. I learned that a lot of the gizmos I had wished for back then (to help keep a steady angle, etc.) did exist even back then: they were just hard to find, but today's versions are much improved.
In my book, I scoff at some techniques like using sand-paper. Had I taken training in woodworking, I would have learned about lapping: thankfully, huboboe has explained that succinctly and clearly.
But mostly, I am happy that more exposure to experts in the field has confirmed my basic tenets, only with much more precise explanations and descriptions. I am also happy to have found sources for excellent "stones" (I include the diamond sharpeners in there) that make my techniques much more efficient. The stone is everything! Knowing what the equipment does, why and how to use it right is vital.
I maintain that the most important thing is understanding how the shape of the blade works and for what purpose it is designed. "Use the right tool for the right job" is an imperative, but that does not imply that if one school of practice is right, all the others must be wrong! The simplest principles can produce fantastic results with little expense with only a periodic fix from a professional.
jendereedknife: Your selection of products for sale shows a very good understanding of all that.
