Sure, I know what you are saying, but when I was speaking of parallel scratches produced by sandpaper and many diamond stones, I was referring to those where the distribution of the grit is a greater distance than the grit size. Some diamond stones, like DMT's and all fine waterstones, ceramic stones and the like have the grit packed so densely that, even though there is a scratch pattern it approaches a polished surface rather than a flat surface with fine scratches.

I retract any implication that a burr is in any way messy. In fact, the more I think of it, the more I think a burr is just a technique for angling the cutting edge into a more 'beveled' configuration. (How's THAT for a bee in your bonnet?)

I'm looking forward to a spirited discussion with you, Tim, Robin, Craig and whoever else ends up in Arizona.

Craig: the Grand Canyon is a must. The word, 'awsome' is overused in the English language. It should be reserved for the few places on earth like the Grand Canyon... If you can arrange sunrise on the South rim you will have an even more awesome experience. And the train ride from Williams is great fun. You can do the round trip loop from either end. Our family did that trip four years ago. Unforgettable!
