Sorry, but I must completely disagree with that.... unless we have a different definition of "burr". In my def., it's a bunch of little teeth and bits of metal folded by the grit of the stone you are using. If you finish with a leather strop, for example, the very purpose of it is to get rid of the burrs.

These "teeth" certainly help with soft cane because they have more "catch", but on harder cane, especially on the tip, they cause a scratchy texture and can rip grains out. You'll never be able to shave hairs off your arm with a burrey blade... more likely to cut yourself.

Note that our reed knife fulfills the same purpose as the blade on a gouging machine or on a woodworking plane: the same general cutting direction except that our wrists and fingers swing
whereas the plane will not.

The only real difference between the cutting edge of a sculptor's chisel and our reed knife is the acuteness or obtuseness of the bevel... and since everything from double-hollow ground to single-sided bevel is used in both cases, the only difference that remains is that the chisel cuts into, whereas the reed knife planes over.

If burrs work for you, great you'll get no argument from me as to what you should do. But as a general principle, burrs are bad.
