Interesting to find this argument happening here! :D
Engineers who sharpen vs. laymen who sharpen always clash. It's kind of funny, actually.
Here's my take - Engineers are driven by precision and numbers. They need absolutes, such as repeatability, accountability, .001" tolerances and manuals for troubleshooting with their proven solutions. It's the nature of the beast, and for the rest of the world it is a good thing. It's black and white.
Sharpening has only one absolute - there is nothing absolute about it. While there are certainly basic principles, tendencies and patterns in sharpening, every knife and tool requires a unique solution. What kind of edge, what shape, what angle(s), influences of the steel type and intended use, differences/pros/cons and effects of different sharpening mediums, etc. It's extremely gray.
Robin, I downloaded your book and I will read it when I get a chance. We are all on our own sharpening journeys, IMO. And as an obsessed sharpener of many different things myself, I think we will have some very interesting discussions. You never know where they may lead
