hm ... this is a pre-adolescent boy who isn't helplessly in love with oboe, but clearly has some nit-picky preferences already

... Fox 300 -- what for the extra expense of split ring E/Eb trill and 3rd 8ve key for a beginner oboe band student? 1st 8ve and half-hole will easily take him up to altissimo F (with a good reed and embouchure) and it will take him at least 2-3 years to get there and make it sound good. He'll be showing pretty good form, if he works diligently on it, by Grade 10, that's a long 4 years away. Meanwhile, he could develop agility in that 3rd right finger by trilling E/Eb the old-fashioned way but don't hold breath waiting for an opportunity at it next 4 years!

... and all that fiddly extra stuff will just need more fine-tuned adjusting a little more often than an oboe without it, and you already don't have good technical help locally?

... in 3-4 years time this suddenly fast-growing kid will be entering silly season adolescent male age, will he then hate fiddly demanding oboe and love more ... fast cars ... and a jazz band instrument such as guitar or drums, clarinet or sax?

If school's 330 is in that bad shape after adjusting locally, clearly you need a reliable instrument, seems purchasing a second-hand but newish Fox 330 Artiste will be quite adequate, it has the Left F & low Bb, and if he's a real talent, falls helplessly in love with oboe, and wants to pursue music on oboe as a career, that's when he'll need a more advanced higher quality oboe with extra bells and whistles -- when he's already proving himself on a completely adequate student instrument

-- wouldn't dare trust him with a **sentimental value** oboe at school for everyday use! He might be very careful with it, but unfortunate accidents or opportune moment disappearances of a resellable item are caused by other kids. Maybe the Gordet could be held in reserve and used only for private lessons and indoor concerts & performances?

... if you have two oboes, one is always the backup for the other sent away for competant maintenance elsewhere with considerable time lapse, can't guarantee it'll need maintenance only in the summer period

... save some money in the bank for the *** huge food bill *** coming to your house soon :-)
