Carrie, I think the Fox instruments would be a great choice for a student oboist. I play with a number of double-reeders who play Fox instruments including bassoon, English horn and oboe. I own a Fox English horn and am very happy with it.
If the budget allows, I would suggest the Fox 300. It has just about all of the bells and whistles including the third octave key and the B-flat resonance. While as a beginner he may not need these, if he is serious he'll welcome having them as he grows with the instrument. The resale value of the 300 would also be higher. That said, if the price difference strains your budget, the 330 is a very good instrument on which to learn.
As, with all of these decisions, consult with your son's teacher.
