One oboe maker told me they like the acoustic effect of their 3rd octave key but don't necessarily recommend using it! in other words, having an additional covered tone hole impacts the sound of the instrument. As for myself, I never had a 3rd octave key until I very recently bought a new Loree. I could do without out for the most part; however, it provides security and flexibility on the very high notes; it decreases the chance of missing a high note and provides yet more alternative fingerings, though one must become accustomed to the nuances of the difference between the same note with and without the 3rd octave key. Two pieces I personally wouldn't want to play in public without the 3rd octave option at my disposal - not that anyone's asking - are the Ewazen oboe concerto and the Bolling jazz suite for Flute a la Alex Klein. Try it sometime! Not saying it can't be done, but you better have the right reed and a bit of lucky breeze at your back!
Btw, Mike, there's not much to using it...you press it instead of the 1st octave key, for the most part it's that simple...the difference is that the octave key it opens is in a slightly different position on the top joint and it opens much less.
