... thanks hautbois, that's really useful to know, sometimes reeds can diagnose the need for a tweaking, i'm not going oboe-crazy after all, pity though isn't it, that we can't get a reliable Diagnostic Reed for our bag of tricks?
OK jhoyla, thanks, here's my cig paper diagnostic
Forked F vent (fingering forked F) - soft pull out, and more pressure on E really firms it up
E pad - tight
Forked F tonehole (above E) - soft pull with a bit more resistance than forked F vent doing forked F
yet, all close fully when fingering normally
When fingering D, forked F vent is firmly closed (E's holding it)
Forked F tonehole (above E) closes but there's a little slide with soft pull
F# closes down well and cancels G# securely -- although both these notes are frequently brighter than i'd like, often have to lip them down, some reeds more so than others
Seems OK to me, but maybe it's marginal and something does need a teeny tiny tweaking?
Periodically i do get an occasional "hissy" note but have assumed it's been my common failure to cover half-hole &/or release 1st 8ve *fast enough* or else slipping sideways off A cap to play left pinky keys -- maybe i should investigate further and not assume this?
