vboboe -- Your comment about your dissatisfaction with the sound of your high notes struck a chord with me. That is the way I felt about my oboes when I played Loree instruments years ago. Although they resonated in the upper range, they were not full; and their tone differed markedly from that of the first octave notes. I certainly hear many players on Loree sounding glorious in that range; but I did not. For me the solution was in changing instrument models, and in somewhat modifying the reed. When I moved to Laubin, the high notes were markedly improved. Now I play Marigaux (2001 model), and am even more satisfied with the fullness and richness of the high notes. (One of my two Marigaux oboes is even richer than the other one in that range; so the particular instrument makes a difference.) With respect to the reed, I changed to Chudnow and Stevens staples, and attend to the degree of resistance in the reed (as little as possible while maintaining stability). I would not think that the possible top joint leaks which you describe in your very grainy top joint would have much affect on the resonance and fullness of the second octave notes, though there is always more resonance when everything seals properly.
