thanks for ongoing responses ~~ although 'weird reed' arundo donax has topically mutated into grainy grenadilla wood by now ...
smoke test hot nots -- muchacha prefers floral exotic woodsy, any burnt smell not hot
E ~~ heard of Chudnow's and see there are two types, which one offers more value-added resonance than the other? If that's not an appropriate question, what playing diffs do you find between the two types? (other than price)
haven't heard of Stevens staples, what are they like? website?
thanks again for timely reminder that the specific individual instrument can make a real diff in how i could sound in upper register, totally essential to do playing tests first. What a diff 2-3 years makes in a student's progress, it didn't matter to me back then
J ~~ thanks, awesome idea! to use air-tight plastic wrap under the pads for suction test. Used plastic at bottom end over finger too ... unfortunately no improvement under 1st 8ve (collapsed dome) pad :-(
tried plastic under separate holes & pads -- very slight improvement when sealing up A and vent under A (and the hairline in the grain between them) but still no satisfactory 'pop' overall
also did plastic under all the holes and vents at once, but again, no effective suction test, which baffles the heck out of me, you'd think it'd seal up something, wouldn't you?
When it's really dark again tonight, think i'll try the bright flashlight test too
Practiced on my beginner model today, gosh what a diff in the upper register, it was 'there' and i didn't have to blow very hard at all, nothing like i've been huffing and puffing (and blowing myself out of breath) on the wood one
Haven't played my beginner's for at least 8 months, and well, whaddya know! Talk about synchronicity, see other post help my oboe's broken ... Had to oil the thing, LEb & low B was binding ! and yes, key oil fixed it OK
