Hi Craig --
I'm still down in Charleston, SC, but found a free computer, so thought I'd check the board.
I really like the "reed subscription" idea, both from the standpoint of the user and from the standpoint of the maker. It gives the maker a certain degree of control over his or her time and effort, and it gives the user a guarantee of timely delivery.
As a reed buyer, the things that matter to me are first, consistent quality from reed to reed, and then, timely delivery.
And I agree with your philosophy of using the best possible reed (and oboe!) from the start, especially in the case of older adult beginners. I arrived at that philosophy after reflecting on my experience as a teen with the clarinet.
There is still some anger and pain about this for me, which is why, when I switched to oboe, I decided that, past a point (i.e., past the point of deciding I would make a serious try at the instrument) I would provide myself with the most adequate tools I could find.
I wouldn't say there is no limit to what I would pay for a good reed (I am NOT one of those crazy people who bid up the Katherine Needleman reeds on Our Favorite Auction Site to something like $150). But I would pay a premium for a consistently good, guaranteed, timely reed.
