Hello Graig,
The time involved is about 24 hours a month,but the real set back is that its mostly weekends.
I hat to limmit to max 5 reeds at the time.
I just do two kinds of reeds roughly finished and finished.The first ones cost €12,50,the second ones € 17.
And no normally I dont adept the basic of the reed,but there are exeptions for instance in a few weeks one a custommer of mine has to play the world premiere of a oboe concerto written for her by John Harvey,so she had some specific wishes,all granted.
To be honest Graig i never look to whom gets what reed so in theory the worst player could get the best out of the batch,but all reeds must meet certain standards.
I have been playing professionally for some years but the urge to have very good reeds is much less at this moment and when I need new reeds I just finish a couple for myself.
The most imported things in reed making bussines are: use the best cane you can buy,select the cane very careful to use only the best.
Try to let shapers and other machinerie make to your specs,have allways everything razor sharp and dont be content with anything less than the best you can make.
