 Reed Making as a Business? - a discussion

Basic idea is side-line business of reedmaking. Lots do it.
I was contemplating this for a very elite quality of reed (based on positive feed-back froma few others who have played my reeds.)

Premise is I would not sell a reed I would not perform on in public, so yield would be low, perhaps 1/3 attempts.

My benchmarking so far has shown I can produce 50 reeds a week in about 5 hours a day that meet these standards.

But this was using my very well cache of aged cane, most 10 -20 years old.

One big question I have is if new crops will sustain the quality expectation.
I also only use pro staples, so where to get bulk discounts for those is also a question.

Anyway, its fun to think about but also important to take a practical business aproach as several contributions have already pointed out.

For those of you purchasing reeds, what do you normally pay for a great reed and what would you pay for the best reed you ever played on?
