Not many teachers whom I have heard about these days have the same approach as mine did with respect to reed-making. I had my first oboe lesson when I was ten. It was also my first reed-making lesson. I first just learned to tie cane onto a staple, and would have several blanks available for the teacher at each lesson. Then, during the lesson, he would make a reed out of them, showing me and expecting me to duplicate more of the various stages of the scrape as the lessons progressed. I was making my own reeds, which he would improve for me at lessons, in about two years. They were not wonderful reeds, but good enough to give me independence, and to give me an idea what playing the oboe entailed. And it ultimately created much less reed responsibility work for the teacher, and much less expense for me.
