Reed Making as a Business? - a discussion

i have a brother who plays the sax..he told me that Sonny Rollins was famous for disdaining people who agonized over their reeds..he felt he could stick anything in his horn and make great music...i think there's a bit of truth in that...i think a great reed means more to the player much of the time than to the listener...this is confirmed by my experience playing next to other oboists who are always fiddling with their reeds even during performances...to my trained ear, there is usually not a discernible difference before and after, but it may be a comfort thing for the player which allows them to focus on making the music as opposed to having to reserve a part of the brain for feedback loops in an internal dialog over what the ... is going on with the reed!
