Craig,
I bought these generic brass staples a while ago to make "student" reeds, but they are actually quite good. I have no problem with intonation or what not, and they are very consistent. The one complaint I would have is that the brass is a bit thick, but they work exceptionally well. For example, I can definitely make a better reed on it than on a Chudnow staple, which tends to sag in the high a for me. Anyways, they're $2.25 a piece.

I still have faith in the cane that's out there. This year I have enjoyed using the Bargain Basement cane from RDG ($50/1 pound), Alliaud ($80/1 pound), and Bonazza cane (122 euros/kg or approx $70/lb).

As stated on the previous thread, the main cost would probably be just time to make them. You could teach a monkey how to sort, split, and gouge cane. but scraping them is definitely the big time factor.

Mr. Weber makes his reeds only by monthly subscription, and he told me he makes 300 reeds a month. He has ASU students gouge his cane and tie his blanks. They sell for $30 a pop.

Not bad considering he makes them in about 10 minutes.
