Author: Dutchy  Date:   2007-04-14 13:15 Speaking theoretically, as a Mom whose daughter took clarinet but let's pretend it was oboe, I would not have authorized paying more for a good-quality "pro" reed for her as a 10 or 11-year-old just starting out, no matter how much it might have improved her playing earlier, because kids that age generally aren't mature enough to take care of a $20 reed. And yes, yes (she said a trifle testily) I know there are some kids out there who were born sober and responsible little miniature adults, but...I saw some of the things my daughter put her clarinet reeds through, the least of which was constantly pulling them out of the mouthpiece and simply tossing them into the clarinet case along with swabs, cork grease, marching lyre, pencils, etc. The thought of her doing that with a $20 oboe reed would be insupportable. So you're probably not going to be able to find a market niche in pro-quality student reeds, Craig.
