... thanks hautbois for detailed adj. advice, looks familiar, but isn't a deeply engrained practical skill with yours truly -- eager to get started ! -- unfortunately it's like Sunday morning around here, rest of family still sleeping in, so can't actually test-blow, will have to report on sound-tests later
paper test results
E tonehole cap -- quite firm but did get firmer after tightening lower adj. screw 1/8 turn so E pad is a tad more secure than it was
small E vent above -- ah, not as firm as E pad, so it's certainly not too tight, could actually be better, so gave upper adj. screw 1/6 turn, feels more like E now, feels fairly balanced (although E maybe seems tighter because 'heavy' finger's actually resting on it, whereas small 'light' E vent closes on itself)
... however, i notice the tiny flange underside isn't completely level with its larger partner flange under these two screws, can pull paper through the larger flange right under the screw end, but (comparatively) doesn't pull easily for the little flange ... will have to see what this sounds like later
Didn't adj F res, it opens fine and forked F centred well sound-wise already anyway -- better than foggy F
Low C pad nice and tight -- perhaps even a bit too tight? Pad presses deeply ... haven't adjusted
D seems firm, not tight, so doesn't appear to be sitting too low, and E definitely wasn't foggy anyway
Cork on underside of F lever appears slender enough, in good condition, glides smoothly
The only thing i observe that might be relevant is the right side F vent pad doesn't seem to be 100% over the hole, underside perimeter isn't fully covered by the cap, can see the groove of the hole's inside perimeter by about 1 mm -- it's as if the F cap's hinge is a fraction short -- and the pad lets paper out quite easily even though it appears shut, maybe the fitting is a fraction bent out of shape and pad isn't resting as 'heavy' as it should?
Which is weird, because the hole is opened to play F, so why would F be foggy -- unless the cap itself isn't opening quite far enough ?
I could get low E and low D OK -- but have found low Bb more balky of late (yes, could usually get it anyway on the reed etc) so if F vent has a silk hair's leak, maybe lowest note is showing it up and i'm adjusting embouchure more than necessary to get low Bb?
