... yes, this has been an informative discussion, thanks!
my grenadilla yamaha's top F (1st 8ve) is sounding weak and poorly lately, my teacher noticed it last week. At that exact moment i hadn't completely covered half-hole and 3rd finger G was leaking, so i fixed that, and it sounded a bit better, and anyway we've been testing reeds with F, F#, G routine so it was hard to tell if it was oboe or reed, i left the lesson with impression that if the reed's not quite right, F can be a very quirky note
... but I don't think F sounds as bright as it used to, in home practice top basic/left F compared to forked F (have F res) and E, F#, G each side of it, is definitely more muted than these other notes
Middle F and middle forked F sounded quite similar in oboe's early life, but lately they're subtly different, forked F is clear and bright, but basic/left F
seems stuffier, but not as noticeable as 1st 8ve F
Maybe relevant, the screw in the F key assembly which lifts the F vent cap(snug beside the E cap) had worked loose once already sometime last fall, and was sent away to be fixed. This screw's not peeping at the moment, but even if it was, I can't get at it in that position, but since F's sliding into stuffiness, maybe it needs a little tightening again?
Other suggestions?
