If you invest in a 30.00 student FHRED you can bypass the exotic woods and high costs.
The FHRED is a little post that holds the oboe up and there are many models available; from the student models to the pro models which allow you to stand and play with most of the weight supported by the little gadget.
Google the word FHRED and you'll come up with their site, which is endorsed by some prominent oboists including Elaine Douvas of the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
However, if you have money to burn buy a violetwood, goldplated, mother of pearl inlaid oboe and have a hoot.
