You can always go for a kingwood or cocobolo bodied oboe - they have the same diameter joints as their blackwood counterparts, but much lighter in weight and better balanced - though they cost around 10% extra for the exotic wood.
When I compare my kingwood oboe to a blackwood one of the same model (Howarth S5), both have the thick joints (22mm diameter by the upper 8ve bush) but I feel my kingwood one is much lighter in weight (though it still has a full tone) and the weight of the bell isn't pulling you down - it's more top joint heavy and balances much better when held by the right thumb and forefinger alone, whereas blackwood ones feel they need more support from the right thumb to keep the bell up.
All the major makers do kingwood or cocobolo as an option on their pro models, though they may have to be ordered specially if none of the oboe specialists stock them.
