I'm always amazed at the lack of weight whenever I pick up an old or a student model oboe - almost the same feeling when picking up my alto sax after playing bari!
The student Buffets are among the lightest oboes on the market.
If you're really struggling with the weight, as well as the Kooiman thumbrests, try a Quodlibet telescopic support - these clip onto the thumbrest (provided you have a sling ring fitted, otherwise a cor anglais/d'amore thumbrest can be fitted) and these free up the weight of the oboe (or any instrument) from your right arm and shoulder as the telescopic part rests against the seat of a chair, or in a special clip that fits onto a belt. I recommended one of these to a clarinet player who's recovering from a fractured shoulder - she was using a sling but it didn't help much, and lead to her having bad posture (with the clarinet pointing straight down instead of being held out front) , but she finds the Quodlibet (FHRED) support is an absolute godsend, not only for the playing posture, but taking the weight off her arm and more importantly, her shoulder.
