I assume you mean the half hole plates on the EH and d'amore, lucy? They function exactly the same way as the little tab on the first finger left hand of your oboe (with the little hole), except on the d'amore/EH, it would be too big (and there's another pad involved), so they split the key into two parts to facilitate the half-holing. (the top plate covers two padded holes, one on top of the other, the bottom one releases the uppermost pad covering the half-hole vent.)
