Common sense might also suggest that soaking a reed and then letting it dry out and then doing this process over and over might not be good for a reed. As I stated I have soaked cane over long periods of time and used these reeds. I'm not sure they rotted. Does anyone have some info here. What does rot mean? The cane is no longer growing. In any case I used this method and the reeds were quite consistent. If one takes a piece of cardboard and puts it is water it becomes soft and falls apart. If you put a stalk of wilted celery in water it becomes more rigid. If you put a flower in water does it rot? One has to be very careful with the use of the term "common sense". A certain technique might seem logical or illogical to you but the proof is in the pudding so to speak. John
